I’m sad to learn the newly released romantic film Me Before You promotes the practice of euthanasia. I was looking forward to seeing this film but upon learning the film endorses assisted suicide, I, as a Christian, cannot endorse this film. I implore everyone to not give your money to the support of sinful practices. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” The apostle Paul also commands us “Take no part in unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” Ephesians 5:11.
Next week California becomes the 5th state to legalize assisted suicide. This practice cannot spread across our country. Clearly this film is politically charged and is released to coincide with California’s law to raise awareness.
Some people justify viewing this movie because it simply looks like a “good movie” and there’s no harm in seeing the movie since they don’t have to support the practice of assisted suicide to see it.
This is wrong.
Matthew 6:22-24 tells us “The eye is the lamp of the body. Therefore, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how terrible that darkness will be! 24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be loyal to the one and have contempt for the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
When you hand over your $10 to see this film you are making a statement to the ticket agent, the people in your theater, and potentially more that you support this film with your money and time. And what does this film support?…assisted suicide. Psalm 24:1 states “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” People need to recognize they belong to God along with their possessions. They didn’t create themselves so therefore they could not have originally created their possessions. God wishes us to serve Him with our time and our possessions (money). We are literally spending our time just as we literally spend our money. So how can you justify spending $10 for 2 hours of your time ultimately viewing something you don’t support just because it looks like a “good movie”?
In this world, with everything, you can only be in or you can only be out…not both. Jesus said if you’re not with me then you are against me (Matt. 12:30 & Luke 11:23). Now more than ever we need to come together as one people by taking a stand against sin no matter how beautifully disguised it is. We must recognize it, expose it, and avoid it just as Paul says “19 Don’t suppress the Spirit. 20 Don’t brush off Spirit-inspired messages, 21 but examine everything carefully and hang on to what is good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil” 1 Thess. 19-22.
There are so many more scriptures I could use to support my article, but I believe the scriptures I have used are enough to help, you, as the reader, understand the truth.
Do not be deceived by the trailers of Me Before You as I was, but do your research as I did. For further, more in-depth reading, I suggest Stephanie Gray’s well written article, Plugged In’s in-depth movie review, and then sign the boycott petition for Me Before You.
Let’s ensure this film bombs and never stop improving the present moment.
